Back!
So today I finally did some spring cleaning on my fermenter. I still had the dregs of my Stout Mint in there, and it smelled a wee bit ripe after all that time outside. I’m still holding bottles of Punch Drunk Love, which surprisingly drinks more like a wine with the fuitiness and the acidity of the cherries, and the complete lack of head retention. In keg one is a tiny bit of Edenton Tea...

Beeraucratic: Priming 101 →
Priming 101 If you don’t have a kegging system, you’re most likely bottle conditioning. Whether you use corn sugar, honey or dry malt, you need to know how to prime. Each style has its own carbonation range and knowing that will help big time.

Update
So I found a huge backlog of pictures on my camera, so expect a slew of posts in the coming days. Also yesterday was brew day, so we’ll start with a couple of pics and a recipe, and then we’ll move on to a bunch of pictures I have of spent grain recipes.

Punch Drunk Love goes to CARBOY (Cary Apex Raleigh...
I don’t know if they were just being nice, but everyone said it was good. I was kind of down on it, but I think I’ll just let it age until next Valentine’s Day and be happy with that until the next revision. Maybe go with fresh cherries or puree rather than canned whole cherries, and try to sort out the poor head retention.

Brewers competition added to State Fair →
Well, that was easy. I guess since I complained about it, I should enter. I was thinking the sweet tea spruce ale would be perfect, but alas it would fall under category 23 of the BJCP guidelines which they are not accepting entries for. The accepted categories are here. Anyone want to throw out some recipe suggestions?

Patience
So my beers have been aging. If you are curious why I stepped away for a while, I was pretty frustrated over the two batches I had on. My last brewday was an exercise in melting down, and I thought my chocolate cherry stout was infected. When I went to pour out the latter, I decided to have a farewell swig, and of course it had transformed into my magnum opus. So it’s gone into bottles. As...

The Homebrewed Triathlete: Beer distributors... →
homebrewedtriathlete: Wisconsin is the most beer friendly state I can think of. Surprised there is a fight over homebrew legislation. http://ow.ly/8Y93l Apparently in WI it is only legal to brew and consume homebrewed beer at your home, thus making homebrew festivals, sharing beer at club meetings (necessary for…

Wearing Stripes: Homebrew, take two →
wearingstripes: Since my brain didn’t come with enough memory, and my “homebrew notebook” is actually mostly full of notes I took at some conference (whoops), maybe I’ll write some stuff here so I remember what I did. And maybe it can help some other upstart homebrewers learn from my mistakes (maybe I’ll even…

Review of Schema Pumpkin
A little late, I know, but I wanted to get something down for my own records. Schema Pumpkin came out pretty well. The aroma is highlighted by the toasted seeds that went into secondary, a sort of earthy, nutty, roasty autumn leaves smell, but you also get some fresh grassiness off the hops (this is the second batch, which I think I accidentally used some Centennial hops to finish). Underlying...

Woman Banned From Beer Contest Because Brewing... →
sarahisabeersnob: From New Zealand - a woman named Rachel Beer denied a spot in a homebrewing competition. Uh, that’s not right. As the article points out, brewing beer used to be considered “women’s work” - since it involved food/beverage preparation and happened in the kitchen. Lake Hayes A&P Show: this is not how you RDWHAH.
